Highguard's Short-Lived Journey: A Look at Its Premature Closure
The gaming world is abuzz with the news of Highguard's early demise. This free-to-play squad shooter, which launched on January 26, 2026, will be permanently shut down on March 12, 2026, just 45 days after its release. This swift closure raises questions about the challenges faced by developers in building sustainable player communities.
Wildlight Entertainment, the studio behind Highguard, announced the closure in a heartfelt statement. They revealed that despite attracting over 2 million players, the game struggled to establish a long-term player base. The studio's efforts to create a thriving community fell short, leading to the difficult decision to close down the servers.
To honor the players' dedication, Wildlight plans to release a final update on March 3 or March 4, 2026. This update will introduce a new Warden, a fresh weapon, account level progression, and skill trees, providing players with a memorable send-off.
The decline in player activity on PC, as tracked by SteamDB, is evident. On the launch day, Highguard peaked with 97,249 concurrent players, but currently, only 302 players are online, with a 24-hour peak of 460. This rapid drop in engagement highlights the challenges of sustaining a player base in the highly competitive gaming industry.
Highguard is accessible on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, and players can continue to enjoy the game until the final shutdown. The game offers cosmetic microtransactions, but Wildlight has yet to announce any refund policies.
The studio's statement reflects on the emotional journey, expressing gratitude for the players' support and belief in their vision. Despite the closure, Wildlight acknowledges the impact of the game, stating, 'While this game may not be the best example for a title that should be preserved, the game effectively shutting down 45 days after launch means that years of work will go into nothing.
