A controversial musical comedy about the alleged UnitedHealthcare CEO gunman, Luigi Mangione, is set to premiere in New York City this summer. The show, titled 'Luigi: The Musical', will take the stage at The Green Room 42 in Midtown West, just a 20-minute subway ride from the Hilton Hotel where Mangione allegedly shot and killed Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in December 2024. The musical provides a satirical take on Mangione's life in lockdown and trial, blending humor with a deeper critique of violence in American media.
The show's creators, songwriter Arielle Johnson and director Nova Bradford, describe it as 'a tale of love, murder, and hashbrowns', a nod to Mangione's habit of eating McDonald's hashbrowns before his arrest in Pennsylvania. The musical premiered in San Francisco in 2025 to sold-out crowds and features convicted crypto fraudster Sam Bankman-Fried and disgraced hip-hop mogul Sean 'Diddy' Combs as Mangione's eccentric jailhouse companions in Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center. Through a series of musical numbers, the trio explores themes of friendship, justice, and the absurdity of viral fame.
Despite the controversial subject matter, Bradford emphasizes that the musical does not glorify violence but rather interrogates it, offering a serious critique of how violence is portrayed in media. The show aims to spark discussions about trust in institutions and the reaction to high-profile cases. Mangione faces life in prison if convicted of murder in the state court trial set for June, and he will also face a separate federal trial in September, where he will not be charged with murder but instead with stalking, leading to Thompson's death. Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
